Numerous progressions have happened inside the twentieth century and associations presently place a lot of significance on adaptability and the quick pace that happens inside the work environment. The paper likewise goes further to disk the moral and lawful issues influencing enrollment, and fuses the important hypotheses related with these issues. Presentation Workers are a principal segment of each association. These individuals are the essential apparatus of the business and they are basic since they complete the errands vital for the business or organizati on. In acknowledgment of the significance of the human factor in associations, most organizations have a Human Resource (HR) office which is accused of in addition to other things recruiting of new representatives. The work power showcase today is for the most part determined by joblessness. Contrasted with the circumstance before, it is moderately simpler to locate a willing specialist for a given position today than it was previously. Most representatives today are, thusly liable to wind up in wrong employments diverging from their capabilities and even intrigue. This tragically makes an interpretation of into a detriment to the organizations (Becker Gerhart 1996). All things being equal, as much as nations experience the ill effects of high joblessness rates on one side, firms in similar nations experience the ill effects of absence of reasonable possibility for work. This marvel is most likely brought about by the nonattendance of fit between the capabilities controlled by poten tial specialists and those required by the organizations. With the current circumstance, the enlistment procedure has, in this way, ended up being harder than it has ever been. It is a lot simpler for an enrollment procedure to bring about an off-base worker since representatives are generally determined by franticness instead of energy to take up any activity that comes their direction (Schwartz 2010). E thical issues, thusly emerge from this mind boggling circumstance. Firms are progressively enticed to disregard the legitimate and moral contemplations for enrollment (Ryan 2006). In this paper I will examine an empty departmental supervisor position publicized by the pioneer paper association. I will determine the different enlistment and determination techniques that can be utilized to get the best recruit and talk about the moral and lawful ramifications of my choice choices.Advertising Looking for report on business financial matters? The supervisors direct all the elements of a business office. They execute systems and direct the departmental workers to build efficiency. It is their obligation to keep up and execute stock introductions, coordinating the day by day exercises in the store and accommodating midpoints or deficiencies to adjust day by day money exchanges. The departmental chief will direct workshops and trainings to construct abilities and spur their colleagues. He will perform nonstop appraisals on the profitability levels of representatives and help them in accomplishing their business objectives. He will be depended upon to think of techniques that will profit their areas of expertise and business on the loose. They actualize changes as started by the organization and bolster business endeavo rs. Via preparing their staff on deals pitches and stress the executives strategies, they help associations in keeping up quality client support (Brannick Levine 2002). This straightforwardly converts into higher deals in the association and new business openings. Enlistment techniques Person-based examination Skills Recruitment is the way toward recognizing the need in an association to add a representative to fill a given job and declaring an opening situation to general society or prospected contender for the equivalent. While enlisting for the above depicted position, I will post an advert in a day by day open paper reporting the opportunity. This will be to amplify the quantity of individuals who will know about the empty position. Informal exchange inside top position supervisors in the association won't be the essential type of correspondence for this situation as today is the situation in numerous associations (Warren 1999). The declaration will be available to people in gen eral and won't offer inclination to any gathering of individual based on race sexual orientation, religion or shading. The advert utilized for this situation is an open chance to all candidates, not determining essentials regarding instruction level or capabilities. It anyway indicates that the candidates ought to be eager, dynamic â€Å"people focused† pioneers. Such open opportunity declarations energize numerous candidates and don't hold the chance of locking out ability. The moral and lawful ramifications As people, our lives are guided by rules and measures which disclose to us the proper behavior in given conditions. As a rule, these standards are settled over numerous years and they are alluded to as morals. Chryssides and Kaler (1993) continue to characterize morals as an arrangement of good standards which helps with making a decision about social direct as â€Å"right† or â€Å"wrong† and this framework is significant for agreeable conjunction in the s ociety.Advertising We will compose a custom report test on Analysis of a Vacant Position in an Organization explicitly for you for just $16.05 $11/page Learn More My preferred moral ramifications of enrollment will be to offer an equivalent chance to every single intrigued up-and-comer. Family and political associations won't precede ability and competency as the key factors in this procedure of enrollment. With respect to lawful measures, it is illicit to give inclination or oppress work candidates regarding race, sex, religion, shading, conjugal status, political stand, spot of starting point, and physical or mental handicap during work postings (Guardiano 1994). Occupation necessities ought to be depicted in a manner to allow every expected candidate to apply (Ryan 1995). Moreover, since Australia is a multicultural network which harbors some minority and distraught gatherings I will need to consider whether there are any governmental policy regarding minorities in society progra ms set up. Governmental policy regarding minorities in society comprises of a lot of antidiscrimination estimates set up which are proposed to guarantee access to certain situations by society individuals who might somehow or another by under-spoke to or completely barred (Kellough 2006). Choice Process Selection follows enrollment and it includes picking a reasonable competitor from the submitted application structures to fill the post. Choice is equipped towards coordinating individuals to explicit employments. This is significantly one of the most basic components in fruitful individuals the board of an association. In the wake of accepting a pool of candidates as a result of the activity posting, I will base on a few techniques for investigation to choose candidates who fit the bill for a meeting. By taking a gander at the numerous application letters that I will get, I will initially play out an individual based examination for the departmental supervisor position, by taking a gander at work force abilities and competency of the candidates (Milkovich Newman 2010). Aptitude based examination During the determination, I will require a base capability of an unhitched males degree in business or a related order for this position. I will necessitate that the fruitful candidates be well outfitted with Information Technology aptitudes to oversee and design business exercises and records. Preparing abilities are basic to help the director in selecting, training and evaluating representatives, and it will be an additional favorable position to those candidates who will have expressed these aptitudes in their application letters. (Brannick Levine 2002). The moral ramifications of the aptitude based investigation will be to offer need to the profoundly qualified candidates to benefit both the association and the society.Advertising Searching for report on business financial matters? What was The Conspiracy of Catiline

During the time of Caesar and Cicero, in the final decades of the Roman Republic, a group of debt-ridden aristocrats, led by the patrician Lucius Sergius Catilina (Catiline), conspired against Rome. Catiline had been thwarted in his ambitions for the top political post of consul, and charged with abuse of power while serving as governor. He gathered into his conspiracy Etruscans and disaffected senators and equestrians. With these, he raised an army. Catilines plan failed. The Conspiracy Revealed On the night of 18 October, 63 B.C., Crassus brought letters to Cicero warning of a plot against Rome that was led by Catiline. This plot came to be known as the Catilinarian Conspiracy. The Senate is Alarmed The following day, Cicero, who was consul, read the letters in the Senate. The Senate ordered further investigation and on the 21st, passed the Senatus Consultum Ultimum final resolution of the senate. This gave absolute imperium power to the consuls and created a state of martial law. The Conspirators Stir up the Countryside News arrived that slaves were revolting in Capua (in Campania, see map) and Apulia. There was panic in Rome. Praetors were instructed to raise troops. Throughout these events, Catiline remained in Rome; his allies stirring up the trouble in the countryside. But on the 6 of November Catiline announced plans to leave the city to take control of the revolt. When Cicero started delivering a series of inflammatory speeches against Catiline, the conspirators planned to retaliate by having a tribune stir up the people against Cicero and his unjust accusations. Fires were to be set, and Cicero was to be assassinated. Ambushing the Conspirators Meanwhile, the conspirators had approached the Allobroges, a tribe of Gauls. The Allobroges thought better of allying themselves with the Roman traitors and reported the proposal and other details of the conspiracy to their Roman patron, who, in turn, reported to Cicero. The Allobroges were instructed to pretend to go along with the conspirators. Cicero arranged for troops to ambush the conspirators with the envoys (false allies) at the Milvian Bridge. Pater Patriae The conspirators who were caught were executed without trial in December 63. For these summary executions, Cicero was honored, hailed as savior of his country (pater patriae). The Senate then mobilized troops to face Catiline at Pistoria, where Catiline was killed, thereby ending the Conspiracy of Catiline. Cicero Cicero produced four orations against Catiline that are considered some of his best rhetorical pieces. He had been supported in the decision to execute by other senators, including the strict moralist and enemy of Caesar, Cato. Since the Senatus Consultum Ultimum had been passed, Cicero technically held the power to do whatever was necessary, including execute, but likewise, he was the one responsible for the deaths of Roman citizens. Later, Cicero paid a high price for what he did to save the country. Another enemy of Cicero, Publius Clodius, pushed through a law that prosecuted Romans who executed other Romans without trial. The law was clearly designed to give Clodius a way of bringing Cicero to trial. Instead of facing trial, Cicero went into exile. Sources:Notes on the First Catilinarian Conspiracy Erich S. The Debate Of Integrating Elements Of Orthodox Christian...

Orthodoxy, Orthopraxy, and Research Researchers face the challenge of integrating elements of orthodox Christian theology and orthopraxy into the theoretical orientation of their research. To maintain the integrity of the study, the research must exhaust ever effort to take themselves out of the research, allowing the research to speak for itself. Biblical exegesis can influences one’s research; a researcher should acknowledge their assumptions, taking steps to mitigate them from the research. Biblical Exegesis, Orthodoxy, Orthopraxy, and Research One’s level of biblical exegesis and interpretation influences one’s believes and behaviors. Woodbridge (2010) provides three elements of biblical exegesis: 1) the world of the writer, 2) world of the original audience, 3) and the reader’s perception of them. How individuals understand these three aspects of a text shape their orthodoxy. Biblical exegesis is understanding what scripture meant for the time and people that it was written to, once that is understood, individuals can make application into the present world. One’s orthodoxy does not always translate into orthopraxy; individuals think they become an exception until their worldview changes (Mittwede, 2013). Orthodoxy must become ones’ worldview in order to affect the orthopraxy of individuals. Biblical exegesis makes the connections between orthodoxy and orthopraxy giving justification for both. Orthodoxy without Biblical exegesis has no foundation except preferences

A Quote From Anatole Broyard s The Perfect Storm And...

Michael Azzolino Mrs. Pledger American Literature 11 14 September 2015 A quote from Anatole Broyard, â€Å"It is one of the paradoxes of American Literature that our writers are forever looking back with love and nostalgia at the lives they couldn’t wait to leave.† People reminisce of some of the worst moments in American history with a dampening eye, glossing over all the grit. Out of the populus, the ones who actively present Broyard’s quote as fact are content creators. This trope appears many times in Literature and even other forms of entertainment such as movies, television shows, and certain video games. Three examples of Broyard’s statement show up in the works: The Perfect Storm, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and The Glass†¦show more content†¦Once the bites had picked up and the ship was full, the â€Å"Halloween Storm† had begun forming. They pushed on into the nor’easter turned hurricane and were never heard from again. We looked back at these men and their time with lightheartedness, like a quick glimpse of a photo, not really thinking about them or the period itself. Jumping to the year 1937 at the end of the Great Depression, we witness the tale of a single mother, Amanda her son, Tom, and daughter, Laura. A mother who’s trying to push her daughter into marriage and shoving her son to work while also trying to relive her glory days, a rinse-repeat story in those days. You were either male and slaved in factories for pay like Tom or female and raised to be a housewife to marry a wealthy man. Tom’s an aspiring poet who works in a warehouse while his sister isolates herself because of her shyness and bad leg, and their mother is woman looking for wealth whether her or her daughter acquires it. Amanda sends her son out to find a man for Laura and he brings back Jim O’Connor. Lo and behold, Jim apparently had been Laura’s high school crush. A dinner ensues with the family, ending with an awkward exchange between Jim and Laura where they kiss and it is revealed that Jim has a fiancà ©e. Jim leaves and Amada blames Tom, who eventually loses his job and skips town on them. Another ‘great time period’ where life for most wasn’t well. Yet authors try to shed light on it wherever possible. A giant leap

Corporate Social Responsibilty

Question: Discuss about theCorporate Social Responsibilty. Answer: Introduction Corporate Social Responsibility is not a new concept it is a very old concept as the trade and the business itself. There are different grounds created by different organizations for defining corporate social responsibility.(Hopkins 2012) But there is one ground on which the corporate social responsibility can be defined as an activity undertaken by a corporation for the welfare of its employees and the society as a whole along with the environment in which the corporation operates. Corporate social responsibility is something that an organization gives back to the society after using the resources of the society for making its profits. Corporate social responsibility is an obligation that a business has towards its customers, society and the environment in which it is operating. (Greunewalder 2008) Importance of Corporate Social Responsibility Though the nature of CSR is controversial it has become one of the most intense concerns for the various businesses. Businesses are expected to create returns for their shareholders by the adaptation of the socially responsible character towards the society. CSR is considered to be a very important concept for the various organizations.(Schwatrtz 2011)CSR is a corporate strategy that benefits not only the society but to the business as well. The importance of the CSR is as follows: CSR helps in building the brands for the corporations and boosting the reputations of them so that they can enjoy a favorable public image. By adopting the CSR in their day to day activities the corporations can increase there valuable assets that includes trust, goodwill and good reputation. If a company has a socially responsible profile then automatically company is in a position of enhancing its competitiveness and it can obtain a significant position in the customers mind. CSR creates economic benefits to the company through the cost reduction and increase in the revenues. If the companies invest socially then they receive benefits by outweighing the costs. This further helps in the development of the various innovative products and services. This can also help the companies in boosting their profits and reducing the costs. Advantages of Corporate Social Responsibility Improvement in the Image of the Corporation The CSR helps in the improvement of the goodwill value of the corporations. Through this dual purpose is served to the corporations, the first one is the consumers will buy products of that company and secondly other companies will be attracted to do the business with the company. Increased Attention and Retention of Employees The companies whose CSR is strong for them hiring and retaining the employees is very easy. People get automatically attracted towards such organization and are willing to work with them. Attracts Capital Inflow from Different Sources The CSR Company has an advantage of attracting huge investors. The company that is engaged in the programs of the CSR has a great image. The capital from the investors abroad is also attracted to such corporations.(Paetzold 2010) Positive Publicity It helps in the publicity of the corporation though it is considered in every business that any publicity is a good publicity. The CSR will act as an advertisement for the company. No hostile nature of the regulatory authorities(Crother Aras 2012) The regulatory authorities will not scrutinize the work of the corporations that have strong CSR. The regulations of the authorities would be lenient for such corporations because the authorities might feel that the companies comply with all the set regulations.(Hederson Florence 2009) Customer Relations The company with a strong CSR will have good and healthy relations with the customers and the customers of such corporations will enjoy working with them. Disadvantages of Corporate Social Responsibility Company reputation becomes a hit The customers loose trust in the companies if a reputed companys product is not up to the mark. The CSR guidelines help to build up the reputation of the company that can prove out to be disadvantageous for the company itself.(A.r 2008) Shareholders Interest For bringing in CSR procedures that are lots of changes that are required to be bought in to the organization for this experienced personnel is required to be hired and it is thought by the shareholders that those costs are covered by the company from the pockets of the shareholders, hence the shareholders loose interest in the company.(Evans 2013) Negative Effect on the Reputation of the Companies The policies of the CSR require that the companies shall release all the important information about the products of the company which might have negative effect on the company. A very good example of this can be known from the fact that coca cola in its 2013 report said that there are some dangerous chemicals in its products due to which the revenues of the company declined. By many people it has been believed that the CSR is a window dressing as many organizations use the support of the CSR to hide their unethical conducts which is not correct thing.(Keilamas 2014) Increase in the Cost of Production The expenditure of the company often increases due to the activities of the CSR programs. Due to this increased expenditure the prices of the products of the company increases simultaneously that are ultimately paid by the customers.(Gaur 2011) Conclusion It is considered that the Corporate Social Responsibility is a vital element for any business. There are various areas that can be chosen by the company to practice the corporate social responsibility. The Corporate social responsibility is considered as an idealistic idea though there are various abusive powers against this concept but still the concept of corporate social responsibility has gained a lot of popularity and organizations prefer to be socially responsible as it helps in boosting their profits by increasing their revenues and decreasing there costs. The companies shall follow the concept of social responsibility as they operate in an environment which offers that various variety of resources due to which they are able to earn lots of profits and they have a responsibility towards the welfare of the society also. So, at last it can be concluded that the corporate social Responsibility is a must for every organization. Filial Piety in China essays

Filial Piety in China essays Xiao, the Chinese word for filial piety is the defining feature in Chinese culture as filial piety was extolled as the highest virtue in China for centuries. I subscribe to the school of thought that filial piety is the root of Chinese ethics and "with it all enlightening studies come into existence." Chinese society was built upon the doctrine of filial piety and that it is the theme in Chinese culture, influencing all aspects of Chinese lives. In this essay, I will examine the significance of filial piety in Chinese culture. Albeit I have no wish of making the mistake of generalization, what I seek to define is the undercurrent theme in all Chinese families which I believe is filial piety. As I believe that filial piety is the common thread that runs in every Chinese family. I am fully aware that my study of filial piety does not apply to every Chinese family, so I can only say that I am sure filial piety endures in different forms, having been infiltrated through many generations and eroded by different events. In order to make my stand, I will be exploring the traditional meaning of filial piety in China, if and how various incidents may have impacted filial piety in China. I will also be analyzing the implications of the erosion of filial piety and the importance of filial piety in modern China. To define traditional filial piety in Chinese culture, it is imperative that I draw on the works of Confucius as Confucianism is the system that has dominated Chinese thought throughout most of history, controlling Chinese education, society and government for some 2,000 years. It would be necessary to take into account Mencius's philosophy as he was also a strong influence on Chinese culture. Xiao in traditional Chinese societies fundamentally means gratitude to one's parents for giving one life and the duty and obligation to repay one's parents for having brought one up. It means love and uncompromising respect for one'...

Cross cultural management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 2

Cross cultural management - Essay Example Every country has a different culture, cultural values, and beliefs. These traits are visible in society and organizations and determine how transactions are carried out. Overcoming these differences in a new business environment is important to the overall success of the business. Cross-cultural management is involved in overcoming these cultural differences. To successfully conquer the Western market, it has numerous principles to follow for success. The article points to the difference in levels of customer service in the two markets. Americans are used to the high quality of customer service thanks to firms like Apple. Asian companies making their entry into the Western markets are not able to match these levels of customer service. Moreover, the article also argues that Western shoppers concerned about the layout of Chinese websites such as Alibaba. Perhaps reflective of the Chinese business streetscape, Alibaba's online platform has a cluttered store fonts and layouts, whereas Western shoppers are more used to minimalist layouts in online platforms. It is, therefore, evident that proper techniques in cross-cultural management will determine Alibaba's success in Western — and other foreign —markets. To illustrate differences between the West and China, I will use Hofstede's six cultural dimensions. Hofstede's adopts a problem-solving approach that is pragmatic in culture management. Hofstede defines culture as a "collective programming of the mind, which distinguishes the members of one category of people from another".

Strategies for Elderly Care and Dementia

Strategies for Elderly Care and Dementia INTRODUCTION There is often a stigma for people who have dementia because of the poor understanding of dementia and how to provide care for them. Although there is a strong association between dementia and old age this is not always the case as there are many reports of dementia in younger people. There is currently approximately 4000 people under the age of 65 with dementia in Ireland(The Irish National Dementia Strategy, 2015) In my report I will explore this in more detail after using various methodologies including internet, books, articles, journals, published reports, class notes, family members who have cared for a dementia sufferer and my own life experience. Main Body What is Dementia? What are the physiological and psychological changes that occur for the older person with Dementia? Dementia is the term used for a wide range of symptoms which sees a decline in intellectual functioning which is caused by a degeneration of the brain. (Hse.ie, 2015) There are many different forms of dementia I will cover the four main ones. Alzheimers Disease Is the most common type of Dementia. It starts off gradual and progress’s slowly. There are three main stages mild, moderate and severe. Each person progress’s differently. Symptoms can get worse during times of stress, ill health(infection) or fatigue. (Dementia.ie, 2015) Lewy body Disease Progress’s quickly and usually effects the part of the brain that control thinking and movement. Therefore the symptoms often are similar to parkinson’s disease ie tremor, shuffling gait. (Dementia.ie, 2015) Fronto temporal lobe Dementia Is caused by damage to the frontal/temporal lobes of the brain. Aspects effected are control, reasoning, personality and movement. Usually effects people at a younger age compared with Alzheimer’s (Dementia.ie, 2015) Vascular Dementia Deterioration of cognitive function caused by mini strokes that are not detected. (Dementia.ie, 2015) Explore the persons needs in relation to the condition. As all types of dementias develop in different stages and each person goes through these stages at different rates of time it is important to have different care plans that are updated regularly for each person if any changes occur even small changes in behaviour or health. Developing a person centred dementia care approach will give the highest quality of care to the individual. According to Tom Kitwood this is ‘Care that is centred on the whole person not just on the diseased brain’ (Vladut, 2014) This can be done if we as carers take the time to find out about the persons life, their interests, likes and dislikes so that we have a foundation to work on in building up a good relationship with the person. Maintaining a healthy diet M.U.S.T analysis is performed – diet adjustments made and food intake monitored Intake and outtake of fluids documented Daily activities done to a routine is very important for a person with dementia but keeping flexibility in mind depending on the individual Reminiscence therapy activities example photo book of ones life, smell of turf fire etc Assistance with personal hygiene, dressing and mobility and letting the individual do as much as they are able to maintain independence Maintaining a safe environment at all times Keeping their dignity, respect and independence in mind at all times Assisting them keep a good self image by letting them choose their clothes and what hairstyle they would like Active listening with the individual at all times What is the role of the carer and Multidisciplinary team in assisting the person with Dementia, what practises need to be implemented, what care settings are available? The role of the carer and Multidiciplinary Team (MDT) is to provide the best quality of care to the person with dementia. To include: Safe Environmentadhering to good housekeeping Risk assessment on environment Living Environmentgood manual handling practices Familiar surroundings Allowed have their own belongings and personal items ie, photos, home like settings if in a care home. Daily ActivitiesSonas Therapy, ie light exerises, music, smelling oils, tasting and textures and lights. Reality Orientation Therapy, using dolls, household items and day to day activities. Household duties – such as folding napkins or doing light gardening Personal AppearanceGood personal hygiene Correct clothing and footwear Assistance with hair if not manageable Maintaining clients dignity, respect and privacy at all times Good RelationshipsBuilding up a good stable relationship is vital Understanding their needs and taking the time to listen Social interaction with other clients, family, friends and workers It is vital in order to keep the client’s independence for the MDT to take our time with the person with dementia and allow them to do as much as they are able According to dementia.ie who conducted a countrywide survey there are 55 care settings in Ireland who are specific to dementia, which is very low considering the high numbers of people with Dementia according to the census in 2011. In the Laois area there is only 1 facility who specialise in dementia care available to people. St Brigids Hospital, Shaen, Portlaoise. 32 patients occupy this facility. According to the census in 2011 711 people in Laois have dementia(Anon, 2015) State the current approaches towards developing quality services for people with Dementia. The National Dementia Strategy Ireland was set up to make an improvement for the people with dementia and their families and carers. It provides information for the clients, their family and carers about the different support networks available to make their quality of life to a high standard. This is ongoing since 2011; they are hoping to have all the strategies in place by 2016. This will be a major breakthrough for Dementia Care in Ireland. (Dementia Services Information and Development Centre, 2015). Anon, (2015) Dementia Services Information and Development Centre – St James Hospital currently offer various courses on Dementia Care for Care workers and management. The Carers Association, Portlaoise offers information and support for carers on Dementia. (Carersireland.com, 2015) Alzheimer’s Association, Portlaoise offer a face to face support network for Alzheimers clients and their family and carers, and hope to open an Alzheimers Cafà © in Portlaoise where people with dementia, their family and carers can go to have a cup of tea to share their stories with other sufferers of dementia.(Alzheimer Society of Ireland, 2015) There has been a major breakthrough regarding medication for dementia, Aricept (Doneperil HCI) – made by Pfizer is a prescription medicine used to treat all types of dementia and can prolong the illness by up to 15 years if used after an early diagnosis. This medication works by stopping the breakdown of chemical called acetylcholine in the brain which when levels of this chemical decrease in the brain signs of dementia appear. (RxList, 2015) Conclusion During my research for this project I have learned that there is an ongoing research and development in ireland for Dementia care. This is much needed in order to combat this disease. I have learned that early diagnosis is key when dealing with dementia and with more widespread education a lot more people could deal with this this disease better. With our aging population I feel this is vital for this country as statistics say this disease will only get worse so with the help of many organisations and researchers we can deal with dementia head on. This will immensely improve the quality of life and quality of care for people with dementia. 2011 Census figures (Estimated number and projected growth in the number of people with dementia in Ireland by age group, 2011-2046(The Irish national Dementia Strategy) References Hse.ie, (2015). johnny tremain essay :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This book starts in the pre-revolutionary time. At the beginning of the book, Johnny Tremain, is working as an apprentice to Mr. Lapham. Mr. Lapham is a blacksmith. Johnny’s parents died in a fire several years before, and this is why he lived with the Laphams. He worked there with enthusiasm for several years until he hurt his arm, scolding it in hot metal. After the accident, Mr. Lapham told Johnny that he needs to find a different profession, but he can stay with the laphams.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Johnny, after a lot of searching, finally finds a job delivering papers. While delivering papers he meets Rab, who works with him. Rab introduces him to the rebel underground. At that point Johnny agrees to deliver messages between the groups of rebels.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This book is a very interesting read, if you have some self discipline. I mean that you need some self discipline because this book didn’t really captivate me in the sense that I couldn’t put it down. But after reading it for a while, I started to appreciate the author’s way of describing the characters and actions in this book.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  There are several things that I like about this book. First off, I love historical fiction, and this is the genre of this book. Also, despite the author being too descriptive, the book went at a steady pace. For me, pace usually determines whether I will read the book or not, and I never really hesitated, or thought about changing books.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  This book was interesting to me, but I think that anyone older than I would find this book a slight bit easy, despite the fact that the author, Ester Forbes does use old English words that are no longer used. So I would recommend this book for anyone between the ages of 12-14, and strongly recommend it at that.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Despite the book being well written, there are several parts that I would re-write; here I will describe two of them.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The first one is when Johnny hurts his hand by pouring hot metal on it.

English as Global Language Essay

The phenomenal rise in use of English has mainly taken place over the last two decades. English has reached high status world-wide because of several factors; as the mother tongue of millions of people all over the world, as the language that millions of children learn at school and the language that is used in international relations, for global communication and as the major media language. The importance of a global language has become major, in some contexts such as communication, e.g. international web-pages on the Internet, English is the only language used. In addition, English is used to establish and maintain connection and relationship between people with different backgrounds from different cultures. In this discursive essay, I will discuss the different aspects of a global language and how it will affect cultures, minority languages and communities all over the world. Disposition of body †¢ Definition of Lingua Franca †¢ Do we need a global language? †¢ Should English be a global language? Why/Why not? †¢ Which standard will be the Standard? / Strict or loose standards? †¢ Will native speakers take advantage? †¢ What will happen to minority languages and communities? Method Before I started to write the essay, I read relevant literature. David Crystal’s â€Å"English as a Global language† contains a lot of useful information, and so does â€Å"Sociolinguistics† by Peter Trudgill. In order to retrieve I want different aspects on the subject, I also used the Internet for research. I was also interested in average people’s opinion, therefore I asked approximately 40 people of different backgrounds, age and gender what they think of English as a global language. 1. Definition of Lingua Franca Many people do not know what a lingua franca is, therefore I will start by defining the term Lingua Franca and also tell a bit about its history. 1.1 Lingua franca is Latin and means â€Å"French language†. The first text written in a lingua franca is from 1353, but a simpler form of it appeared in the 11th century. The origin of this term is from the modern era when French became the language mostly used in commerce and diplomacy between the European countries. Not only French serves as a lingua franca, several European languages had the same status; e.g. English, Greek, Latin and German. The term lingua franca became so common that it continued to be used for any â€Å"universal† language. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingua_franca 2005) 1.2 A lingua franca can be any language which is used for communication among people who have no native language in common. In many of the former European colonies in Africa, French or English are used as the language of communication in trade and business. (Trudgill 2000:132) In some parts of Africa, other African lingua francas, such as Swahili and Hausa, are used. These languages are indigenous in some countries and have become used because of political reasons. When a language is used as a lingua franca, it undergoes a certain amount of reduction and simplification. The simplification often refers to getting rid of irregularities and grammatical gender in the lingua franca. This happens because adults are, unlike children, generally not good language learners, and therefore need a simplified version of the language. (Trudgill 2000:165) Should English be the Global Language? People in general have different opinions on English as a â€Å"global† language. There are positive as well as negative aspects of this. Do we need a global language? Why do we need it? Why should English be the best option? 2.1 Translation has always played a central role in interaction between people with different languages and language skills. Thousands of years ago, monarchs, ambassadors and merchants had to rely on someone to translate. But the more linguistically mixed the community got, the less they could rely on individuals to ensure their communication. Most of these problems have been solved with a lingua franca or a â€Å"pidgin†. A pidgin is a language created, usually spontaneously, from a mixture of other languages as a means of communication between speakers of different languages Pidgins have simple grammar and few synonyms. The prospect that a lingua franca might be needed for the whole world is something that has arisen in the twentieth century. Sin ce the 1950s, many international organisations have come into being e.g. the UN and the World Bank. Also political groupings e.g. The European Union and The Commonwealth have come into being. The pressure to make an agreement concerning one language has become urgent, but it is a sensitive issue. (Crystal 2003: 12-13) The need for a global language is mainly appreciated by the international academic and business communities, but also by individuals as the world becomes more and more global. (Crystal 2003: 12-13) 2.2 Why English has grown as much as it has, and why it might be seen as the best option for a global language have more than one answer. One is the geographical-historical reasons, and another is the socio-cultural. The geographical-historical part explains how English has reached its position and the socio-cultural explains how and why it remains that way. (Crystal 2003: 29) 2.2.1 English came to England from northern Europe during the fifth century and started to spread around the British Isles. (Crystal 2003: 30) The historical movement of English around the world began with the expeditions to Asia and America and continued with the colonial developments in Africa and the South Pacific. When many colonies became independent during the mid-twentieth century, they kept English as their official language or semi-official language. This led to a major step forward for the English language; it is represented on every continent and on islands in the three major oceans, making the label â€Å"global language† a reality. (Crystal 2003: 29) 2.2.1 The socio-cultural aspect looks at the way people in many ways have become dependent on English for their social life and for their economic well-being. English is the language of many business and political domains and also the language of entertainment such as television, the film industry, the music business, communication (internet, telecommunication and computers) and safety. (Crystal 2003: 29) 2.2.2 Today’s status of English has mainly two reasons; the expansion of the British colonial power and the emergence of the economical power of the United States. The latter is what scientist argue explain the status of English in the world today. (Crystal 2003: 59) 3. Positive and Negative Aspects on English as a Global Language 3.1 Positive aspects of English as a Global Language According to Buck (2005), English has, without doubt, reached the top position in the language hierarchy. Almost 30 % of the population are already â€Å"reasonably competent† in English. As the language of commerce, economy and politics, knowledge of and fluency in that language is helpful when participating in these fields. The economic power houses, the political bodies and commercial organisations also use English as their language of communication. More than 85% of the scientific, technological and academic production in the world today is performed in English. By using English you are able to communicate with people in almost all countries all over the world. English is the most widely spoken language with regards to number of countries, even though Chinese, Hindi and Spanish have more native speakers. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language 2005) The case might be that even in countries where one of the other languages is spoken you will be able to communicate wi th the inhabitants, using English as a lingua franca. It is often taken for granted that one speaks English and when someone does not, one might be looked upon suspiciously. I asked approximately 40 people from different backgrounds, different age and with different nationalities which language they would prefer as a global language and the majority answered English. The following reasons were given: It is the language you hear and read every day; the younger generations have learned it in school and it would be the best global language because it is the most spread all over the world. The people, who disagreed, said that Spanish would be the best global language, because it has more native speakers than English. 3.2 Negative aspects of English as a Global Language Even though there are many positive aspects of having a global language, there are negative aspects as well. How would it be possible to carry through a global language? Are there any dangers with having a global language? A global language might cultivate an elite class with native speakers, who take advantage of the possibility to think and work quickly in their mother-tongue. If this was the case they might manipulate it to their advantage at the expense of those who has another language as their mother-tongue and in this way create a linguistic gap between people. (Crystal 2003: 14-15) English has a history, sometimes cruel and violent with colonialism and war, and introducing English as the global language might be seen as a threat of future dominance. Perhaps a global language will make people unwilling or unable to learn other languages and make other languages unnecessary. (Crystal 2003: 15) One of the â€Å"risks† having only one language is that the chosen language may become very technical and â€Å"impoverished† for non-native speakers, e.g. the Eskimos, who have several words for snow, because they need it. They would probably not be able to express themselves properly if they only had one word for snow. And Swedish people would not be able to use the word â€Å"lagom†, a word which says a lot about the Swedish society and people. Many of the people who answered my question about â€Å"English as a Global Language†, expressed a worry that if we only had one language, they would feel â€Å"poor† when it comes to expressing feelings and emotions in a language that is not their mother-tongue, that they would not know enough words to be able to really express how and what they feel. 4. Standards – which standard should be used? Strict or loose standards? English is the mother-tongue of millions of people in different parts of the world. If English were to become a global language, which standard of the language would be the global standard? Perhaps the standards would become looser. 4.1. Standard English is the English that is usually used in print. It is also the English which is normally taught in school and to non-native speakers learning English. This is also the standard that is spoken among educated people and used for news broadcasts. (Trudgill 2000: 5-6) Historically, the British Standard developed from the south-east part of England (the area around London). These dialects were spoken in court, used in law and by the government. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_English 2005) Standard English has a widely accepted grammar, and an accent that comes with this standard, the British English accent, also known as the â€Å"Oxford English†, is the accent that is taught is schools. (Trudgill 2000:6-7) Furthermore this English has a major cultural influence, especially on the languages in the former Commonwealth countries, e.g. South Africa, Australia, and India as well as the European Union. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_English 2005 ) 4.2 We often hear about â€Å"American-English†, â€Å"South African-English† or other â€Å"Englishes†, but no such terms really exist. The different types of English are based on the British English but have developed grammatical and vocabulary differences because of influence and â€Å"loanwords† from other languages.(Trudgill 2000:6-7) 5. Minor Languages and cultures What will happen to minor cultures and languages if we introduce a global language? An introduction of a global language might lead to discrimination of other languages. Losing a language equals losing identity. The language is much more than just a tool for communication. According to Trudgill there is an intimate relation between language and culture and a large homogenisation of culture might lead to a shift in language where native people adopt another language and eventually the old language may die out. There is a difference between â€Å"language death† and â€Å"language murder†. Language death is when a language disappears naturally; its speakers are leaving it voluntarily, but â€Å"language murder† means that the killer language actively discourages use of other languages. Minority languages may be removed from the media and educational systems. English is referred to as a â€Å"killer language†, which means that it is a dominant language learned subtractive, at the cost of the mother tongues, rather than additively. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_language 2005) In the United States there have been a few â€Å"English Only† movements, the first one in 1803, when they banned the speaking of French among the population in Louisiana. After that, several attempts to remove Spanish and French have taken place. English is declared as the official language in several states in the US. The English-Only movements have been rejected by linguistics; they mean that a language does not create political unity, it takes more than that. The use of one single language in a community is no guarantee for social harmony or mutual understanding. This has been proven several times during the history, e.g. American Civil War, Spanish Civil War and former Yugoslavia. (Crystal 2003:16) 6. Conclusion This essay has shown that the creation of a global language has numerous advantages and disadvantages. Mutual intelligibility, great career opportunities and reduced administrative costs are some of the advantages a global language would give. The disadvantages are that English is closely linked to the British and the American cultures and history and is therefore not a â€Å"neutral† language. Perhaps a language with less historical and cultural connections would be a better option? We are in need of an international language for communication, politics, trade and security, but at the same time we are worried about language death, the advantages native speakers will have and all the disadvantages non-native speakers will face. English is growing, it is a strong language, and its future seems bright. My opinion is that if there will ever be an international language, English is the best option. It is a strong, well developed language with millions of speakers. Even if a global language might be important, different languages are of importance for their culture and for the development of their native speakers. Languages make the world more interesting and more alive.

Do We Need Feminism Of Be Alive Today - 1270 Words

Do we need feminism to be alive today? If you’re an intelligent human being, you may be wondering why I’m asking you such a silly question, since the answer is obviously ‘yes of course, who would think otherwise?’ You’ll be very surprised then to hear about a disturbingly large number of men who (even today) would argue that a women’s purpose is solely to serve the male population: a woman’s place is in the home they argue. They tell jokes about women with two black eyes, having to be told twice. Women are still perceived as submissive and below men, which is still far from the gender equality that some naà ¯ve people believe we have in today’s world. Do men and women get paid the same wages for doing the same jobs? No. Are women’s accusations against men in situations of sexual and domestic assault taken seriously? No. There have been so many inaccurate and negative definitions of feminism which have been drilled into people’s minds, so let’s start with the true definition of feminism, shall we? Feminism is the radical notion that women are people and should be allowed the same rights, power and opportunities as men and be treated with the same respect. Nothing more, nothing less. An Existentialist Meaning of Life Essay Example For Students

An Existentialist Meaning of Life Essay Arguably one of the most pondered questions in philosophical thought has been, What is the meaning of life? Humans have been put on this earth with the knowledge of self awareness and the ability to manipulate the environments that they inhabit to a greater extent than any other species on the planet. Ultimately one must wonder what purpose there is to ones own existence and define what it means for them to be. Presupposing the existence of different human beings in the external world, there would undoubtedly be varying opinions regarding the ultimate purpose of existence. Several key thinkers in modern existentialism provide the necessary framework for establishing a so-called meaning of life. Marcel, Sartre, Heidegger and Camus, refer to the theoretical frameworks of subjectivity, freedom, responsibility and purpose, in modern existentialism. With reference to the theoretical frameworks, established by these reputable thinkers, one could propose an answer to the age old question, What is the meaning of life?. That being, the meaning of life is to live a good a good life. The existence of the external world and other human beings: Perhaps Descartes made the most powerful argument in the form of the Cogito, when he stated, I think therefore I am. Historically, the certainty of the external world has been called into question, at various times, in philosophical thought. The whole Platonic tradition is one such example. Camus carries this notion a step further by saying, This heart within me I can feel, and judge that it exist. This world I can touch, and likewise I judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction. (Camus, pg. 19) Sartre elaborates on this point claiming, Contrary to the philosophy of Descartes, contrary to the philosophy of Kant, when we say I think we are attaining to ourselves in the presence of the other, and we are just as certain of the other as we are of ourselves. (Sartre, pg. 45) Even if one were to accept Descartes evil genius hypothesis, they would still have to admit that beings in the outside world still affect them. Regardless of whether other human beings are actually realor not is irrelevant, since we would still have to treat them as such. The consequences of not doing so would inevitably be similar one way or the other. For example, if I decided to go about shooting everyone at random, claiming that I am the only real human being on the planet, I would inevitably be thrown in a psychiatric prison. Besides, existentialists would not waste their intellectual efforts arguing about the existence of the external world, and beings of comparable consciousness to ones self, in it. Although this was a central question in philosophy for some time, it is now generally regarded as nonsense. (Madison, Sept. 17, 1998) It is, logically impossible to deny ones own existence as a subject. (Madison, Dec. 2, 1998) There exists the idea in our reality that every individual person is different. Although we may have similar emotions and undergo the same physical processes, we assume that no two people are exactly alike. If this is the case, we can assume that there will be minute differences in the way individuals perceive certain stimuli. Therefore their reaction to that stimuli, whatever it may be, will be different than that of anothers. Sartre claims, every truth and every action imply both a human environment and a human subjectivity. (Sartre, pg. 24) Subjectivity is a key concept in existentialist thought. Heidegger claims that, the very essence of man is subjectivity. (Heidegger, pg. 133) Although a key notion in existentialism, this idea has existed for ages, being aptly illustrated in the ancient tradition, as the doctrine of Protagorean relativism. We cannot come to know anything about ourselves, except through the mediation of another. (Sartre, pg. 45) This is to say that external observation is required for knowledge. .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .postImageUrl , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:hover , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:visited , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:active { border:0!important; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:active , .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u0bae8159ad0ba16e00f13ca643d448bf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Witness Analysis Essay He goes on to say, Thus we find ourselves in a world which is, let us say that, of inter-subjectivity. People Who Look for Excitement and Danger Are Foolish free essay sample

Often we feel pity for those people who have died or got injured while doing something dangerous. So is the case with those who are too weak or scared to look for any kind of excitement. So what exactly is the worse†¦not to look for excitement or to get hurt on the path of danger? This is the question I will be answering, and with the help of a few choice words, I will hopefully make my point. The fact is that, often are people too lethargic or too contended with simple everyday business that they dare not go forward for any kind of thrill. I am against this. People should enjoy life and have fun and not be scared of getting hurt. Of course, often people do get injured but that is a small price for exhilaration and should not dampen any one’s spirits. And if proper care is taken then one needs not fret for any calamities and causalities that might occur. We will write a custom essay sample on People Who Look for Excitement and Danger Are Foolish or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Proper staff and gear; that is a basic necessity of any adventure of wherever. Good health and fitness also comes in handy. If people do not do anything for fun and excitement then assuredly this world would have been a dull and boring place. People would neither know the joy of adrenaline pumping through their veins nor the thrill of having death chase them around. It is not at all foolish to look for danger and excitement. Actually, it is foolish to just sit around and wait for the end of your life rather than chase it down a mountainside or across a river. On the other hand, I am not suggesting that people should go crazy and harm themselves and the ones around them. No, I do not support that. Merely I am saying that it is understandable to look for fun and thrill, and not foolish to do it.
